[***Moderators' note: The message below is a response to questions raised during the Global Consultation on the World Programme on HRE, which was held in June and July. Due to the summer break the summaries of this discussion have not been posted to the list yet. You will receive draft summaries starting this week. The final report of the Global Consultation, including recommendations, will be submitted to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and UNESCO mid-September.***] Dear friends, I have finally finished reading the entire message trail and have a few final comments: With regards to HRE communication: media, if utilized appropriately can be an effective and powerful tool in promoting awareness e.g. using audio/video web content for education and communication of existing issues. While this may have limitations depending on availability of resources e.g. teleconferencing, nevertheless, there is definite potential for leveraging technological progress and the benefits far outweigh the costs. As for a success formula for coordination efforts and mechanisms, no such elixir exists. If it did, we would not be trying to find it! In fact, friends from developing countries frequently report problems of abuse within the aid system itself, something we must all be sensitive about. Whether a top-down, centralized or a bottom-up, grassroots method is best at coordinating efforts is open to debate, although in my opinion, the ideal approach to making a difference and creating change is through participation, and by joining hands at any/every possible level. To this effect, I request your help and invite you all to review and audit our efforts by visiting the RESPECT website at www.respectrefugees.org. We are very interested in hearing your feedback about our programs/initiatives and welcome suggestions based on your HRE experience.
