1. NPCA Global Educator Award and Peace Educator Award nominations open

Do you know of an educator who is doing outstanding work in global
education or peace education? Are you that educator?

The NPCA's Global TeachNet Program seeks nominations for two types of
awards for K-12 school-based educators: Global Educator Awards and Peace
Educator Awards. We encourage nominations by all interested parties,
including parents, students, administrators, and community members. We
also accept self-nominations.

Global Educator and Peace Educator Award winners will receive a $500
monetary award and national recognition. Their global and peace
education lesson plans will be featured in the Global TeachNet website
and newsletter.

For complete details, go to
http://www.rpcv.org/pages/sitepage.cfm?id=55. Nominations must be
postmarked by October 18, 2004.

2. The People Speak Youth Circles

 >From Choices for the 21st Century:

-FREE RESOURCES-
~Engage your students in the national dialogue on the U.S. role in the
world~

The coming months will be a time of heightened public debate in the
United States concerning the U.S role in the world. The Choices Program
is working with The People Speak to bring this topic to high school
students this fall.

In mid-August, 4600 teachers across the country received a packet of
resources from the The People Speak designed to engage high school
students in this topic in the classroom and beyond the classroom in
their extracurricular or community activities. Free resources included:

. The U.S. Role in a Changing World (reproducible text and teacher
guide)
. The People Speak Youth Circles Guide (designed to help students build
on their experience in the classroom to organize and lead discussions in
other venues)
. Youth Circles poster

Ask for your free packet: If you did not receive this free packet and
would like to engage your students in this topic this fall, you are
invited to contact the UN Foundation at 202-778-3534 or via email at
mailto:info@thepeoplespeak.org.

Engage your students: All students participating in this initiative -
either in the classroom or beyond - are encouraged to complete the
online ballot available on the Choices Program web site at
http://www.choices.edu/usroleballot. A full report will be sent to the
White House, Members of Congress, and the press following the 2004
elections.

Let The People Speak know: If you are going to participate in The People
Speak - either in class or by helping your students to lead discussions
on the U.S. role in the world in other extracurricular venues - we
encourage you to let The People Speak know. You can go online to
http://www.thepeoplespeak.org/youthcircles.

There is further information on The People Speak Youth Circles on the
Choices Program web site at http://www.choices.edu/peoplespeak and on
the NPCA website at http://www.rpcv.org/globaled/resources.

About The People Speak: The People Speak is a nonpartisan coalition of
organizations including the UN Foundation, ABC News, and the American
Enterprise Institute. Information on The People Speak is available
online at http://www.thepeoplespeak.org.

3. International Day of Peace (September 21, 2004)

Posted by request:

On behalf of Pathways to Peace, a non-governmental organization, we
invite your school to observe the International Day of Peace on
September 21, 2004. This day offers an important opportunity for
individual schools to become part of a worldwide observation. We
encourage you and your students to start planning for this exciting day.
Suggestions to help you in your planning: Observe a minute of silence at
12 noon, plant a tree, schedule an assembly with a peace theme, hold a
conflict resolution workshop, ring a bell for peace.

Two International Day of Peace celebrations will take place at the UN:
one for youth, on 17 September, and one on 21 September for the ringing
of the UN Peace Bell. Both events will be webcast on
http://www.cyberschoolbus.un.org -- More details on how to access the
webcasts will be posted in a couple weeks. A youth-created Public
Service Announcement will also be available to you by September 1st to
use in your school. Download it from
http://www.internationaldayofpeace.org

2004 Earthwatch Annual Conference & Educator Track
November 5 & 6
New England Aquarium, Boston & the Hyatt Regency, Cambridge

Earthwatch Institute has engaged the public in scientific field research
and education worldwide since 1971. The research findings and continuing
explorations of our scientists is showcased at our annual conference.
This gathering is an opportunity not only to meet directly with
world-renowned scientists, but also to network with educators, students,
volunteers, and professionals from around the world.

In addition to Speaker and Poster sessions at the Annual Conference, our
Educator Track offers sessions on:
.	hands-on learning in the classroom,
.	community action for local conservation,
.	and increasing environmental awareness in the workplace.

The Educator Track invites educators to share their experiences, gain
insight into fundraising techniques and resources, collect materials and
contacts that will enhance their curriculum, and personally network with
researchers, peers, administrators, and informal educators.

Contact Phoebe Morad at 978-450-1264 or pmorad@earthwatch.org for

Bring the World into Your Classroom!
Join the Tajikistan-US School Connectivity Program

Relief International- Schools Online is running an exciting connectivity
project with high schools in Tajikistan. During the upcoming school
year these schools will be paired with high schools in the United States
for school-to-school partnerships. Throughout the year partners will
collaborate via information and communication technology to evaluate,
research, discuss and report on designated issues related to global
civic education. Methods of collaboration include live web-based chats,
e-mail exchange, online newsletters, and message boards.

Early in the fall, Tajik teachers will visit US counterpart schools as
part of a teacher exchange. Following the visit in April, six US
teachers will be chosen for a three week exchange to Tajikistan.

The goal of the program is to facilitate virtual school-to-school
projects as a means of building international relationships and
deepening the cross-cultural exchange for students and of sharing
education methodologies for teachers. We are looking for passionate,
involved educators who want to explore the world with their students!
If you are interested in learning more about this project, please see
our website at: http://www.connect-tajikistan.org or contact our US
office at 650-486-2456.
