Dear friends: I was in a recent meeting where we were discussing messages and curriculums to the primary audience (youth). The conclusion was if we wanted to be effective, that a HRE - targeting oppression and violence must be addressed in all classes. Meaning - it just can't be discussed in social studies. That it must be taught in English, Math and the Arts. In addition to after school activities - Recreational Programs, School Sports, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, Faith community activities, YWCA/YMCA, Girls Clubs and Boys Clubs, Big Brothers and Big Sisters... We also are looking into curriculums and research that is looking at bystander behavior. Besides role playing, there is limited curriculums that help the students "stand up to the bully" and get the rest of the crowd to join them. We also discussed the need for a coalition and grassroots support for this initiative. We also are looking at materials to help communities to do this type of organizing. (The anti-youth drug and alcohol and tobacco campaigns have a lot of resources regarding this) These included parents groups, community leaders, teachers, school administrators. We felt that we needed to look at both the negative messages and positive messages these groups were giving to our youth. We included in our plan training sessions to help them reinforce positive messages. Also we discussed the need to look at all systems in the community (Meaning - city laws to school policies.) We are interested in: 1) What are they? 2) How are they made known? 3) Are they carried out or sitting in a binder somewhere? and 4) If they are carried out - what are the consequences - meaning is there justice?
