Dear Colleagues, Today we will start the on-line Global Consultation on the World Programme for Human Rights Education. For five weeks, from June 14-July 18, you will have a chance to share your opinions, experiences and recommendations. The results of the discussion will be presented to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and UNESCO who are preparing a Plan of Action for the UN General Assembly. During the first week of the on-line Global Consultation we would like to to focus on the strategies for introducing human rights education (HRE) into primary and secondary schools. The Plan of Action for the Global Programme for Human Rights Education should ideally include detailed guidelines for action that can be taken at the national, provinicial/state or school district level in the various areas comprising the school sector. These areas include: - educational policies - curriculum - textbooks - learning materials - teacher training (pre-service and in-service) - extracurricular activities - the learning environment in schools. Based on your experience, what realistic strategies might you suggest that countries undertake in order to introduce human rights education in schools at the national level, be it in Canada, Mexico or the USA? Within your state/province or school district? What would be some of the benchmarks that you can think off for efforts of introducing or sustaining HRE in your school system by the end of 2007? Please be specific and, if possible, identify a minimumeffort that might realistically be undertaken as well as a maximum effort. We look to receiving your insights, experiences and recommendations, Warm regards, the Moderators, HREA Asian Regional Resource Center for Human Rights Education (ARRC) Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies Instituto Interamericano de Derechos Humanos (IIDH) Union Interafricaine des Droits de l'Homme (UIDH) ======== North American Human Rights Education listserv ======== Send mail intended for the list to <hr-education-na@hrea.org>.
