Studies on attitudes and knowledge about human rights among general public

The Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission participates in an
omnibus survey of the general public in Alberta on an annual basis, with
questions along the following lines:

* how well individuals believe their human rights are protected
* how important an environment free of discrimination is to their overall
quality of life in their community
* their awareness of the human rights commission
* the importance of the commission in protecting human rights in the province
* awareness of the types of discrimination prohibited within the province
* to what extent they believe people in Alberta have an opportunity to
participate in the province's social, economic and cultural life without
discrimination
* how often they have experienced discrimination in the previous 12 months
and on what grounds

The questions are designed to provide information that can inform the
development and delivery of programs and services, and so vary from year
to year. One question (how well human rights are protected) is asked every
year as it used by the provincial government as one of its performance
measures. Demographic data is also collected that allow the responses to
be analyzed for significant respondent variations related to gender,
income, geographic location, and level of income.

In 2002 the Commission conducted a survey of representatives of employers'
experiences and perspectives on human rights. The survey can be found on
our web site at:
