Educating young people in the 21st century involves helping them bear
witness to contemporary world issues facing humanity and the planet and
fostering responsible, global citizenship in a world of unprecedented
interdependence, challenge, and possibility. Stories of war, countries in
conflict, the effects of globalization, health crisis, poverty and
immigration feature prominently in the media, civil society, government and
higher education, but teaching and learning about these realities is often
uncharted territory in K-12 education.
- Through the study of present and emerging realities in society and
education, Bridging Classrooms and Communities Institutes facilitate an
enriching professional education experience for elementary or secondary
educators designed to encourage deeper teaching and learning about the
world around us in ways that foster broad global awareness, highly informed
social knowledge, and active civic engagement.
- Bridging Classrooms and Communities Institutes guide and support
educators in the development, implementation and assessment of a
curricular portfolio that with direct application to a participant's practice.
- Each institute experience begins with an intensive five-day seminar,
followed by guided and independent study work to help participants further
develop their curricular portfolio.
- For participants who wish to complete their curricular portfolio through
the Institute process, there will be follow-up sessions on Implementation
and Assessment to offer on-going support to educators throughout the 2004-5
school year.
