Genocide and Human Rights University Program (Minneapolis, Jul 6-16/Toronto, Aug 3-14, 2004)

Genocide and Human Rights University Program
Summer Institute for K-12 Teachers, Undergraduate and Graduate Students
Minneapolis program: July 6-16, 2004; Toronto program: August 3-14, 2004

The Genocide and Human Rights University Program will take place July
6-16, 2004 at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and August 3-14,
2004 in Toronto. In collaboration with the International Institute for
Genocide and Human Rights Studies and the University of Minnesota, this
program analyzes genocide through a multi-disciplinary approach and
provides the intellectual framework for understanding genocide and the
human responses to it. The program explores the universality of the issues
related to genocide and takes a comparative approach for understanding the
Armenian Genocide, The Holocaust, the Cambodian Genocide and Rwandan
Genocides, and more recent events with genocidal overtones. Other themes
explored include the mass violation of human rights; women, children, and
genocide; how to teach about genocide; issues of memorialization and
representation; and possibilities of dialogue and reconciliation between
perpetrator and victim groups. The program is taught by renowned scholars
and guests, who include Taner Ak=E7am, Joyce Apsel, Vahakn Dadrian,
Stephen Feinstein, Richard Hovannisian, Roger Smith, Eric Weitz, Barbara
Frey, and Stephan Astourian. Special guest speaker includes Major Brent
Beardsley (Canadian Staff Officer with the UN Peacekeepers in Rwanda).
