Ellen, You have made an excellent suggestion for linked activities that learners from middle school upwards would be able to carry out. One might focus on comparing the UDHR with CEDAW and there could then be an extension activity that would challenge learners to change the language of the UDHR so that it is more gender neutral. Around all this, learners could consider the historical context of the UDHR vis-a-vis women's rights, and also fold in the issues facing women today in different parts of the world. I think these activities would be equally engaging for adults. I encourage anyone who is similarly motivated by Ellen's suggestions - but with a little more free time than I have at the moment - to outline a couple of lessons that would accomplish these aims and to share them on the listserv for us all. Thank you, Ellen, for taking our listserv discussion and turning this into a new learning opportunity. It would be great to have new activities that help us to engage critically with these two key human rights documents.
