WORLD FORUM ON HUMAN RIGHTS Nantes, France, 16-19 May 2004 Dedicated to the International Year to Commemorate the Struggle against Slavery and its Abolition And to the memory of Mr Sergio Vieira de Mello, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights killed in Baghdad on 19 August 2003. "We all have a part to play in making the enjoyment of all human rights a reality for everyone." Sergio Vieira de Mello The City of Nantes, at the initiative and with the support of UNESCO, in cooperation with the French National Commission for UNESCO and supported by the Office of the High Commissioners for Human Rights and the International Labor Office, is organizing the World Forum on Human Rights. The Forum will bring together on an equal footing all the actors involved in the promotion and protection of human rights. It will contribute to strengthen interaction between research and decision-making, with the aim to consolidate a global movement for human rights. By gathering all those who are working in research (universities and specialized centers), in policy-making (States and intergovernmental organizations), and in advocacy and action (non-governmental organizations and media), the Forum will offer a platform for joint action for the world of science and research and the world of policy and action. The Forum will contribute to generate ideas, exchange and advance knowledge and to use this knowledge to address challenges and threats to human rights in the 21st century. The main topics of the Forum are: * Terrorism and human rights * Globalization and the struggle against all forms of discrimination and exclusion * Poverty as a violation of human rights Keynote speakers are: Bertrand Ramcharan, Acting High Commissioner for Human Rights Alvaro Gil Robles, Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe Robert Badinter, Senator and Former President of the French Constitutional Council Paul Hoffman, International Executive Committee of Amnesty International Pierre Sané, Assistant Director General of UNESCO for Social and Human Sciences Jean-Marc Ayrault, Mayor of Nantes and Member of Parliament and many others.
