Teacher institute "Teaching for Understanding in Secondary Classrooms: Post September 11" (Cambridge, Mar 19-20, 2004)

Upcoming Teacher Institutes March 19-20:
Teaching for Understanding in Secondary Classrooms: Post September 11

The events of September 11 and their aftermath have dramatically increased
the need for educators to have a deeper understanding of Arabs, Muslims,
and South Asians communities in the United States, and to have new and
more effective strategies and resources for teaching their students about
these communities, cultures, and religions. Educators for Social
Responsibility (ESR) is partnering with Harvard University's Center for
Middle Eastern Studies, Education & Leadership for a Nonviolent Age (ELNA)
and the Post 911 Coalition to sponsor a two-day teacher institute,
Teaching for Understanding, that aims to address this need by equipping
local middle and high school educators and other concerned individuals
with tools and strategies for understanding these communities and
interrupting bias and discrimination in their schools and communities.

The institute will include an optional Friday evening program of Arabic
Music, Dance, and Culture with well-known local performer Karim Nagi
Mohammed. This event is open to the public.

Who Should Attend: Secondary school teachers, counselors, administrators,
and concerned individuals
When: Friday, March 19 (8:30 to 4pm) Friday evening presentation (6 to 9pm)
Saturday, March 20 (9 to 1pm)
Where: Braun Room, Andover Hall, Harvard Divinity School, 45 Francis
Avenue, Cambridge, MA
Cost: $25 includes breakfast both days and lunch on March 19

16 PDPs will be offered through The Outreach Center at Harvard's Center for
Middle Eastern Studies upon completion of a short implementation response
or lesson plan based on the institute.
