WHAT'S HAPPENING IN GLOBAL EDUCATION IN NORTH AMERICA? Dear List Members, As you are aware, recent events have made it painfully clear that North Americans need a better understanding of the world in which they live. At the same time, it also has become clear that the assessment/standards movement has seemed to make it more difficult to bring a global perspective to the curricula of the schools. Even so, many outstanding global education programs do exist. However, for a number of years now there has been no serious, large-scale effort to determine the state of global education in North America. For that reason, a group of us, all very much involved in the movement, has decided to try to put together an electronic (and perhaps printed) directory of relevant programs so that educators can share ideas, learn from each other, and develop global education programs for their students.[*] To that end, we have designed the attached questionnaire and are asking you to take a few minutes to fill it out and return it to us. We also are asking you to identify other individuals, programs, projects that you believe would be worthy of inclusion in such a directory. We would like this to be as comprehensive as possible. You will be notified of the results of the project upon its successful completion. For your information, the definition of global education that we are using is the one from the 1991 ASCD Yearbook, Global Education: From Thought To Action: Global education involves learning about those problems and issues that cut across national boundaries, and about the interconnectedness of systems---ecological, cultural, economic, political, and technological. Global education involves perspective taking---seeing things through the eyes and minds of others---and it means the realization that while individuals and groups may view life differently, they also have common needs and wants. We thank you, in advance, for your participation, Anne Baker, National Peace Corps Graham Pike, University of Prince Edward Island Andrew Smith, The American Forum for Global Education Ken Tye, Chapman University [*] Some of you may remember the Global Education Yellow Pages published by the American Forum for Global Education.
