The Peace Education Center of Teachers College Columbia University,
through the Center for Educational Outreach & Innovation
(http://www.tc.columbia.edu/ceoi/ CEO&I), offers an innovative set of
Peace Education designed trainings and workshops for educators, activists,
NGO and UN community members, curriculum and policy developers,
community-based and civil society organization members as well as other
constituencies concerned about the needs and possibilities of education
about issues of security, peace and war, human rights, social justice and
ecological balance.
The trainings and workshops can be taken non-credit without registering in
a degree program at Teachers College, or for credit as a compliment to
other programs at Teachers College. It is designed for participants who
wish to study at Teachers College for concentrated periods and does not
require continual residency. (Please see more details at the bottom of

(Both of our fall offerings fulfill requirements of non-credit
participants seeking to earn a certificate of attendance)
EDUCATION FOR A CULTURE OF PEACE & JUSTICE: HUMAN RIGHTS PERSPECTIVES
ITSF 4094.016, CRN 31434. ("Educational Planning in IED")
Dates: October 24-25, 31, and November 1.
Fridays: 4:00-9:00pm. Saturdays: 9:00am-6:00pm.
Available for 2 credits, non-credit or 3.0 CEU's. Non-credit fee: $400
Instructor: Professor Peter Lucas
This intensive offers an introduction to the international standards of
human rights, the historical generations of rights, the conceptions and
distinctions between them, and the universality of rights that are all
conceptual attributes of a culture of peace. Students will also learn
about international human rights organizations, how advocacy groups can
and do respond to violations, and how people represent human rights in
print and media. The workshop is built around peace education
methodologies and participatory demonstrations of curricula and lessons
that can be adapted to K-12 learning environments. Students will leave
with sample lessons, a comprehensive bibliography, and resources that
include the basic human rights documents and a directory of organizations
that offer curricular materials.
PEACEMAKING AND CONFLICT: A HOLISTIC APPROACH

This Peacemaking and Conflict intensive will explore the spectrum of
approaches to conflict toward prevention, resolution and transformation
and how these are inter-related. Core peace education concepts, values,
knowledge and skills will provide a framework for understanding current
conflict issues. Specific methodologies and international regional lesson
samples suited to elementary, middle and secondary levels will be
provided. Adaptability to students' learning settings will be emphasized.

Additional Details:
Certificates of attendance are awarded to non-credit participants upon
completion of five trainings including one special workshop offered by
international visiting scholars. The trainings provide a conceptual base
and training in the pedagogy and methodologies of peace education, with
emphasis on practical application. All involve substantive and curricular
participation by staff from the Peace Education Center.
