A teach-in on Children in Armed Conflict
Call for proposals
A number of organizations concerned about the impact of war on children
around the world are working together to present an evening forum and
day-long conference on children in armed conflict. The evening session
will take place in Vancouver, BC on November 20 followed by a day of
workshop and other activities on Saturday, November 22. We invite
organizations, activists, artists, academics, experts, and those with
first-hand experience to propose a session or activity in the format of
their choice. This may include, but is not limited to: interactive
workshop, presentation, art display or installation, film or video, or
theatrical work. Topics may include: child soldiers, international law,
sexual violence against children in armed conflict, psychological
consequences, material shortages (food, healthcare, water, fuel, etc.),
creation of refugees and displaced people, role of the media, conflict
prevention and post-conflict work. Please refer to the teach-in objectives
for more information. No fees will be paid for participation but some
travel subsidies may be available.
The objectives of this teach-in include:
- To raise public awareness and build empathy around how children are
affected in situations of armed conflict throughout the world;
- To engage the general public in discussion and collaborative working
sessions with activists and experts;
- To prepare participants, as individuals and in concert with others,
to take effective, concrete action to promote and protect the rights of
children affected by armed conflict;
- To build public support for organizations actively working to address
issues related to children and armed conflict.
