SUMMER INSTITUTE ON HUMAN RIGHTS: HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE 21ST CENTURY
16 June - 18 July 2003
American University, Washington, D.C.

This leadership development program for emerging human rights 
scholars and activists is cosponsored with Amnesty International. The 
programme is comprised of four elements: Seminar on the Politics of 
International Human Rights, Advanced Topics in Human Rights: 
Religion, Culture and Human Rights, Internship in International Human 
Rights and Skills in International Human Rights to include; Managing 
a Nonprofit Human Rights Organization, Legislative Advocacy and 
Grassroots Organizing.

INTRODUCTION TO HUMAN RIGHTS SEMINAR (16-27 June -- 3 credits)

An introduction to the development of universal human rights norms in 
the international system; efforts to implement these at the national, 
regional and international levels, and contemporary debates 
concerning the universal implementation of human rights.

ADVANCED TOPICS IN INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS: RELIGION, CULTURE AND 
HUMAN RIGHTS (7-18 July -- 3 credits)
This course will explore the connections between religion, culture 
and human rights. The focus will be on in-depth studies of what 
religious traditions say about the rights of believers and 
non-believers, men and women, privileged members of society and 
others.

INTERNSHIP IN HUMAN RIGHTS (16 June-18 July - determined with instructor)
Service learning experience designed to help students integrate 
classroom learning about human rights issues and the practice of 
human rights advocacy work.

MANAGING A NONPROFIT HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATION (23-26 June - 1 credit)
Coordinating the efforts of professionals and volunteer staff, 
working with a governing board, and raising funds for nonprofit 
organizations are examples of topics covered in this skills module.

LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY (16-19 June -- 1 credit)
This course introduces students to the art of advocacy work. Topics 
include how to lobby legislatures in the U.S. and abroad.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION AND HUMAN RIGHTS (29 June-3 July -- 2 credits)
This course will focus on various approaches to mediation, 
negotiation, and human rights in conflict-torn and developing regions.

Tuition is $769 per credit, $300 per hour for professional noncredit.
