Fellowships at the National Endowment for Democracy

The National Endowment for Democracy welcomes applications to its
Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program. Funded by the U.S. Congress
through a grant from the U.S. Department of State, this new program
enables democracy activists, practitioners, scholars, and journalists
from around the world to deepen their understanding of democracy and
enhance their ability to promote democratic change. The fellowship
program is based at the International Forum for Democratic Studies, the
research arm of the Endowment, in Washington, D.C.

The program offers two tracks: a practitioner track (typically three to
five months) for practitioners and activists to improve strategies and
techniques for building democracy and to exchange information with
counterparts in the United States; and a scholarly track (typically five
to ten months) for academics to conduct original research for
publication. Practitioners must have substantial experience working to
promote democracy. Scholars must have a Ph.D. or academic equivalent.
Please note that a working knowledge of English is an important
prerequisite for participation in the program.

The Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program is intended primarily to
support practitioners and scholars from new and aspiring democracies.
Accomplished scholars from the United States and other established
democracies are also eligible to apply. The program is not designed to
defray the cost of education for students working toward a degree.

The fellowship year begins October 1 and runs through July 31, with
entry dates on October 1 (for 3-10 month fellowships) and March 1 (for
3-5 month fellowships). In special cases (e.g. for three-month summer
fellowships), the program may accommodate fellows in August. The program
is closed in September. All fellows receive a monthly stipend, plus
health insurance and reimbursement for travel to and from Washington.
Stipend levels take into account the fellow's annual income, level of
experience, and the cost of living in Washington, D.C.

To apply, please follow the application instructions available online at
www.ned.org Please note that all application materials must be
type-written and in English.

Deadline for fellowships beginning Fall 2003 (fellowship duration: 3-10
months) and Spring 2004 (fellowship duration: 3-5 months): September 17,
2002. Notification in late February 2003.
