Dear Colleagues: We have just been informed that a consortium of civic education organizations, including Street Law, has been awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Education called the Democracy Education Exchange Project (DEEP). The project will involve top democracy education specialists from Eastern/Central Europe and NIS countries. It is designed to enhance democracy education in these countries and help U.S. high school students understand more about how democracy is being implemented in that part of the world. We would like you to identify people who you believe would enhance democracy education in your country as well as work with U.S. educators to help them teach about democracy in your country. We are looking for a broad spectrum of people--people from the Ministry of Education, pedagogical institutes, jurisprudential scholars, legal professionals (lawyers, judges, police officials), teachers, and researchers--including those who have been involved in CIVITAS projects. Once we have collected all of the names, we will send an application to them and select up to ten people from up to sixteen Eastern/Central European/NIS countries to participate in the project. The team will develop a plan for improving democracy education in their country and be eligible for a grant and technical assistance to begin implementing the plan. The program will include two weeks in the United States and a conference at the beginning and end of the project. We look forward to receiving names as soon as possible but no later than November 2, 2001. Include their titles, contact information, and, if not evident, how they might enhance democracy education. Please send this information to <gschwarz@streetlaw.org>. Sincerely yours, Bebs Chorak Deputy Director Street Law, Inc.
