CHILDREN'S PARLIAMENT ON THE RIGHT TO EDUCATION, NEW DELHI FROM NOVEMBER 8-10, 2003 What is this parliament? The Children's Parliament is a two day event, a side event to the Higher Level Group Meeting, in which a small group of children will come together to share their experiences on education, to debate on the problems faced by all children to get access to education, and to draft a key set of demands that they identify as important to be dealt with to ensure education for all children. This is not actually a "parliament", in the sense that the children are elected or have any legislative decision making powers, it is more of a consultative process to allow a group of children to express their views and opinions and outline what they believe is important for world leaders to focus on in the provision of education for all children. Who is organising? The Global March Against Child Labour on behalf of the GCE (Global Campaign for Education), and in collaboration with the Indian national coordinators of the Commonwealth Education Fund (CEF) is coordinating the Children's Parliament. What will the children discuss? The children coming from different states across India will acclimatize and be introduced to each other. They will be involved in workshops, games, team building exercises, drama activities and debates and eventually come up with some key demands on the right to education for all which will be placed before the Higher Level Group Meeting scheduled for 10-12 November, 2003. Children from different states will be discussing major issues they are faced with throughout the globe in receiving an education. Themes range from HIV/AIDS, child labour, accessibility to school, communal violence to girls' education among others. What will be the outcome? The discussions and conclusions met at the Children's Parliament will help produce the Children's Communique, which will be presented at the inaugural session of the Higher Level Group meeting. We at Global March Against Child Labour call for support towards this Parliament. If you believe that all children have a right to free, quality education do share your views with us.
