Some of the leading international and national experts in the fields of child
rights and child poverty will talk about this key issue of the 21st Century.
It will provide an opportunity for human rights experts to discuss issues of
poverty and the fulfilment of rights with child poverty researchers,
campaigners and policy makes.
The results of a major UNICEF study on child poverty and child rights in
developing countries will also be presented. This research provides the first
scientific estimates of the extent and depth of child poverty in the developing
world.
Conference speakers include Peter Townsend (LSE & Bristol), Conor Gearty
(LSE),
David Satterthwaite (International Institute for Environment and Development,
Elizabeth Gibbons (UNICEF Global Policy Division), Christine Chinkin (LSE),
Ruth
Lister (Loughborough) and David Gordon (Bristol).
The report, Child Poverty in the Developing World, based on the UNICEF study,
will be launched at the LSE at 13.00 on Tuesday 21st by Mary Robinson
(former UN
High Commissioner for Human Rights) and discussed at the House of Commons
between 17.30 - 19.00 by Margaret Hodge (Minister for Children), Jean Corston
(Chair of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights) and others.
