CRINMAIL 403: Special Edition on the World Summit on Sustainable Development

23 August 2002: CRINMAIL 403: Special Edition on the World Summit on
Sustainable Development - Johannesburg 2002

****************************************************
The World Summit on Sustainable Development will take place in
Johannesburg, South Africa from 26 August to 4 September 2002. It will be
the largest summit the world has ever seen.

At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio, the international community adopted Agenda
21, an unprecedented global plan of action for sustainable development. Ten
years later, the Johannesburg Summit presents an exciting opportunity for
today?s leaders to adopt concrete steps and quantifiable targets for better
implementing Agenda 21.

Whether it be campaigning for climate change or advocating for increased
aid, the issues debated at the WSSD will directly influence the lives of
children throughout the world.

The following list of publications and on-line resources puts the focus on
issues to be discussed at the World Summit and their subsequent impact on
children. Many of the publications listed included in this special
CRINMAIL are available in PDF format on the Internet.

****************************************************
CRIN will be producing a series of CRINMAILs throughout the duration of
this important event and is very keen to receive information about recent
publications, including papers, reports, and websites, in addition to news
and projects that link the issues discussed at the World Summit on
Sustainable Development with children. We would especially like to hear
from CRIN members, and other CRINMAIL subscribers, in the South. To

- GLOBALISATION: Harnessing Globalisation for Children (2002) [report]

Harnessing Globalisation for Children represents a comprehensive effort to
assess the impact of the latest wave of globalisation on children. It also
examines the kinds of policies and programmes that can best harness
globalisation?s benefits on their behalf.

This report argues that children can gain substantially from globalisation,
but only if domestic conditions are improved, if distortions in
international markets are corrected and if more representative institutions
of local and global governance are created. In the absence of these
changes, globalisation will benefit only a minority of the world?s
children. Available on the Internet at:

- SAVE THE CHILDREN UK: Globalisation and Children?s Rights (2002) [report]

For some children, the effects of globalisation can be positive, but for
many it is profoundly damaging. Poor children are particularly vulnerable.

Globalisation and Children?s Rights examines two economic aspects of
globalisation: foreign private sector investment and the privatisation of
basic services. Both represent increased involvement of the private sector
in the lives of children and raise serious concerns in respect of
children?s rights. The report explores some of these elements and offers a
set of recommendations to help make globalisation work for children, not
against them.

- UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATION ? CANADA: Youth Agenda 2002 [project]

This is a dynamic project aiming to educate and mobilise young Canadians
around issues of sustainable development, towards the World Summit. Since
the first Earth Summit in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, youth have played an
increasingly active role in the decision-making processes in Canada and
have undertaken a wealth of initiatives to further sustainable development
in the country.

The Youth Agenda 2002 project is about providing an opportunity for
individual youth and youth organisations to take an active role in Canada's
preparations for the Summit. Under the co-ordination of the United Nations
Association in Canada (UNA-Canada), a dynamic group of Canadian youth were
brought together to create the Youth Summit Team (YST) whose leadership was
essential to the success of the project. The YST has taken concrete steps
towards ensuring a successful stream of achievements until the WSSD by
creating an Action Plan to guide their activities leading up to and beyond
the Summit.
