The goal is to ensure that the security of children informs Security Council and other actions in specific situations as well as through generic resolutions. The Watchlist is looking for a full-time Co-ordinator to lead this work. The main responsibilities of the post are as follows. To work with the Steering Committee and Watchlist partners to develop strategies and work-plans for the Watchlist effort; to research, prepare and keep up-to-date Watchlist reports on children in situations of armed conflict; to co-ordinate related advocacy activity; to seek support of Watchlist objectives from governments, intergovernmental agencies, international organisations, media and other appropriate entities; to maintain regular communication with the Steering Committee, and serve as a focal point and spokesperson for members of Watchlist and others, including the media, governments, and intergovernmental agencies; to identify funding sources, develop proposals, and actively solicit funds for the Watchlist budget; to manage the dissemination of Watchlist publications, including collaboration with the Child Rights Information Network (CRIN); to co-ordinate a media strategy and act as the principal spokesperson for the Watchlist; to supervise Watchlist volunteers and interns; and to oversee the Watchlist budget, including the preparation of financial reports for the Steering Committee and donors. The successful candidate will have: - Significant past experience providing strong political and diplomatic/negotiation skills working with NGOs and governments; - Advanced knowledge of international human rights and humanitarian law, with specialisation in child rights issues; - working knowledge of the UN system and relevant international and regional organisations; - The ability to work independently and with little supervision; - Experience managing complex projects and deadlines involving different partners; - Skills in budgeting, financial reporting and personnel management; and, - Excellent written and spoken English and excellent editing skills. The Optional Protocol has now been signed by 93 states and ratified by 13. To mark this important milestone, the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers is organising special events around the world to highlight the child soldiers issue and promote the Optional Protocol. The Coalition is planting thousands of "red hands" (the Coalition logo) around the UN buildings in Geneva and is inviting the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and other VIPs to participate. National coalitions are also organising events of different kinds in Bangladesh, Yemen, Philippines, Pakistan, New Zealand, Guinea, Italy, Ireland, Norway, Georgia, the DRC, Venezuela and, most likely, the US, UK and Belgium. The Coalition would like to invite all CRIN members to join in these activities or organise their own events. Please take the opportunity to write to or call your government to ratify the Optional Protocol before the UN General Assembly Special Session on Children in May.
