1. What e-learning courses does HREA offer?
HREA offers two types of courses. Rapid e-courses are introductory, take between 3 and 5 hours to complete and are completely self-directed (you interact directly with the course content, including assessments and feedback). They can be spread out over days or even months depending on the learner’s situation. Tutored courses are led by instructors and are generally 6 to 11 weeks in duration. 2. How are tutored courses structured?
HREA’s tutored courses typically involve 4-6 hours of participation per week. Each course is different, but a participant might spend 3-4 hours reading, watching videos and participating in online discussion forums. Each week might also include a live webinar, quiz or written assignment. Every course includes regular interaction with other learners, the instructor(s) and facilitator. Courses are based on a participatory, active learning approach with an emphasis on peer-to-peer learning. Learners will need to have access to the Internet on a regular basis. Shortly before the course begins, participants will receive the syllabus, which contains detailed information about the course objectives, pedagogy, resources, and logistics (including a schedule of the course assignments and deadlines). All resources will be available on the course website starting on the first day of the course. Course weeks begin on Wednesdays. The course instructor(s) will post an Instructor’s Message, which gives an overview of the topic, summarises the resources and activities of the week and provides important logistical information. A weekly discussion question(s) will be e-mailed to all participants, who will need to go to the course website on a weekly basis to respond. However, participants do not need to schedule a particular time to be available during the online forum discussions; they can contribute whenever it is convenient during the week. Participants will receive collective feedback from the course instructor(s) following each discussion. The instructor(s) will provide individual feedback for all written assignments submitted on time. Each course includes optional readings and other resources for learners who want to delve deeper into particular topics. If participants meet the course requirements, they receive a certificate of completion that can be downloaded from the course website.
3. How can I pay for a course?
You can pay tuition online by credit card (Discover, MasterCard or Visa) or PayPal. If you cannot use either payment option, you can also pay by bank transfer. Please contact HREA (training [at] hrea.org) to request an invoice that will include the required bank information.
4. Do you offer scholarships?

5. What are the technical requirements?
HREA uses the Moodle Learning Management System. Learners can access the course website at their convenience. You will need an Internet connection to access the course website on a weekly basis. You will also need to install the following free software: Adobe Reader, Flash Player and Java. It is also highly recommended to have a headset or computer speakers so that you can listen to or watch any content with audio, such as webinars, videos or podcasts.
6. Do I need high-speed Internet access?
No. HREA’s courses do not require a high-speed internet connection and are set up so that participants from all over the world can access the course websites, download course materials, and participate in online discussions at their convenience. HREA course facilitators are available to help if participants encounter any problems accessing or downloading course materials. Some of the popular activities in HREA courses do require a faster connection speed. These include participating in live webinars, watching videos and completing self-directed modules.
7. Are there any textbooks required for my course?
No. All learning materials required for your course will be available on the course website for your use.
8. Who teaches the courses?
Tutored courses are led by practitioners and human rights experts from human rights organisations around the world. Rapid e-courses are self-directed (you interact directly with the course content, including assessments and feedback).
9. What does it mean to be an auditor in a course?
Auditors take the course for the purpose of self-enrichment and academic exploration. Auditors have access to the course website, including all course resources, such as Instructor’s Messages, readings and videos. Auditors are welcome to participate in the webinars and view the discussion forums. However, auditors cannot participate in discussion forums, submit exercises for review by the instructor or attempt quizzes. 10. Do you offer course credits?
HREA’s e-learning courses are not accredited. However, accreditation can be arranged for courses carried out cooperatively with the UN-mandated University for Peace. For more information about HREA-UPEACE courses, please visit www.hrea.org/upeace.
11. What if I am unable to complete the course I have registered for? Do I get a refund?
A refund can only be offered before the start date of the course. There is a US$ 75 processing fee for all refunds. Unfortunately, HREA cannot offer refunds after a course starts. We can only defer a participant to a future session of a course in an exceptional circumstance.
