This certificate course jointly organised by HREA and the Human Rights Centre of the UN-mandated University for Peace engages participants in the contemporary debates surrounding the benefits and challenges of corporate social responsibility (CSR) for businesses of all sizes and sectors. The course will examine the increase in popularity of CSR mandates, the qualities of successful programs, and their resilience during economic recessions, while also critically examining through case studies their effectiveness and ability to create global social change in supply chains, accountability, and working conditions.
The course will address the multiple stakeholder perspectives of corporate social responsibility, beginning with the business case for CSR, the “triple bottom line” theory, as well as the role of social/impact investing. The course will also look closely into economic and social justice, environmental externalities, the changing role of technology, as well as the impact of consumer awareness and education. Strong emphasis will be placed throughout the course not only on business practices and responsible management, but on ethical concepts of the role of business and enforcement mechanisms.
Participants will explore debates on the voluntary nature of CSR initiatives, the neo-liberal economic perspective of the role of business, the effectiveness of regulatory measures, and the future of CSR, and will take part in interactive webinars with the instructor and business leaders.
This e-learning course involves approximately 30 hours of reading, interaction with students and the instructor on discussion boards, quizzes, a written assignment and webinars. The course is based on a participatory, active learning approach, with an emphasis on critical reflection and peer-to-peer learning. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Participation. It is also possible to audit the course.

About the instructor: Mihir Kanade
Mihir Kanade is the Director of the UPEACE Human Rights Centre and is also a faculty member in the Department of International Law and Human Rights at UPEACE. Prior to his pursuit in academia, Mihir practiced for several years as a lawyer in the Supreme Court of India and the Bombay High Court, focusing on issues relating to corporate responsibilities on areas such as human rights, environment and labour, amongst others. He has served as a legal advisor to many human rights organizations as well as corporations and has represented them before different courts and tribunals in criminal, constitutional and labour cases. His principal area of academic research and study is Human Rights and Globalization, including the relation between business corporations as one of the principal drivers of globalization on the one hand, and social justice on the other.
Who should apply
The course is intended for business leaders, procurement managers, officials with corporate social responsibility in their portfolio, staff of NGO and inter-governmental organisations and others interested in corporate social responsibility. Candidates should have a good written command of English and have high competence and comfort with computer and Internet use. HREA and UPEACE aim to ensure equal gender and geographical distribution across the selected participants.
Tuition fee for participants: US$ 575 (after 1 December 2014: US$ 675); tuition for auditors: US$ 215 (US$ 250 after 1 December 2014). There are no scholarships or discounted tuition rates available for this course.
