Global Human Rights Education Network

The Global Human Rights Education Network (the Network) is an information and advocacy network that promotes learning and training in the field of human rights. Membership is open to all organisations that support the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and are involved in education and training activities promoting the human rights framework. The Network is an initiative of Human Rights Education Associates (HREA) in collaboration with the Arab Institute for Human Rights (AIHR, Tunisia), the Asia-Pacific Regional Resource Center (ARRC, Thailand), the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS, Egypt), HURIGHTS-Osaka (Japan), the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights (IIDH, Costa Rica), and the Union Interafricaine des Droits de l'Homme (UIDH, Burkina Faso). Support has been provided by UNESCO, the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Reebok Human Rights Foundation.

The Network was inspired by the vibrancy of the informal network of educators and trainers who participate in the Global Human Rights Education listserv as well as regional listservs of partners in Africa, Arab-speaking countries, Asia, the Americas, and Russian-speaking countries. The informal network is constituted by over 10,000 individuals and organisations engaded in human rights education (HRE) worldwide.

The objectives of the Network are:

  • to promote information-sharing among membership
  • to support the sharing of good practice in carrying out education and training activities
  • to advocate for human rights education and training in all sectors, as called for in the United Nations World Programme for Human Rights Education.

In promoting these objectives, the Network will ask members to commit to sharing resources and experiences. These will be posted in the quartely newsletter of the Network as well as the relevant HRE resource centres for wider distribution. Members will continue to have the benefits of information about training courses and on-line learning and training tools hosted on the HREA website.
