Good Practices in Human Rights Education

Beginning in winter 2009, this section will host the Human Rights Education in the School Systems of Europe, Central Asia and North America: A Compendium of Good Practice. This Compendium includes proven tools to promote human rights education in primary and secondary schools, including:

  • Policies and curricula (e.g., policy statements, national action plans, legislation, curricula)
  • The learning environment (e.g., whole school approaches, school governance)
  • Teaching and learning practices and tools (e.g., methodology, resources)
  • Professional development of teachers and other educational personnel
  • Evaluation and assessment approaches and tools

These practice areas are consistent with those established by the World Programme for Human Rights.

This Compendium is the result of a peer review of good practices submitted to HREA, which coordinated the compilation of the Compendium on behalf of The Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE/ODIHR), the Council of Europe, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
