International labour standards, equality employment and workers with family responsibilities

14 March 2005 - 25 March 2005

As part of its broad mandate of promoting social justice, the ILO has always been concerned with equal opportunities. This concern has entailed measures, such as the adoption of several International Labour Standards, to redress gender inequality at work. The three main instruments adopted by the ILO in this respect are the two fundamental Conventions on Equal Remuneration (C. 100) and Non-Discrimination (C. 111) together with the Convention on Workers with Family Responsibilities (C. 156) and the related Recommendations. C. 156 promotes a real equality of opportunity and treatment in employment for men and women with family responsibilities as well as between workers with family responsibilities and workers without such responsibilities.
Useful guidelines are provided by International Labour Standards concerning women workers' rights and the non-discrimination of workers with family responsibilities. The knowledge of International Labour Standards and other international instruments on women rights, such as the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), their application and the active participation in their monitoring mechanisms, is indispensable for those who wish to contribute to the improvement of women's conditions.

The ILO, in collaboration with the Turin International Centre, developed a training and information package on International Labour Standards and Women Workers' Rights, which constitutes the basis for this course.

General objectives:
- to contribute to the promotion of women's status;
- to promote the rights of women workers' in the framework of equality of opportunities and treatment in employment;
- to contribute to the design of legislative instruments complying with international standards on equality of opportunities and women workers' rights;
- to contribute to the spreading of information regarding International Labour Standards;
- to promote a wider participation of the organisations and institutions represented in the International Labour Standards System.

Specific objectives:
- to have a good understanding of and to use the provisions of the International Labour Standards concerning equal opportunities and women workers' rights;
- to identify the mechanisms for the promotion and implementation of such instruments;
- to promote at national level the knowledge of women workers' rights, in particular through the use of the training and information package developed by the ILO and by the ITC;
- to draw action plans to promote and disseminate knowledge on women workers' rights.
