Apply Now! 2012 Exploring Humanitarian Law Summer Institute - June 25 -28, 2012

Dear Educator,

The American Red Cross would like to invite you to apply for this year’s 2012 summer institute for educators on Exploring Humanitarian Law (EHL).  The institute will be held from June 25th to June 28th, 2012 at the American Red Cross National Headquarters in Washington, DC.  The 3 ½ day training offers educators a hands-on experience with the EHL curriculum, which helps teachers introduce global humanitarian principles in their classrooms. Participants will walk away from the training with easy to use, customizable teaching tools and resources that explore concepts of life and human dignity, ethical judgment, global citizenship, the protections of international humanitarian law and the role of the Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations.

The institute will also feature dynamic guest speakers and leading subject matter experts, including Jimmie Briggs, award-winning journalist and human rights activist; Morris Davis, U.S. Air Force Colonel (Ret.) and former Chief Prosecutor at Guantanamo Bay; and Gary Solis, former director of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point’s law of war program, retired U.S. Marine and leading law of war expert.

Educators will be provided with a variety of learning materials and strategies to help them incorporate EHL into existing educational programs.  Through brainstorming, large- and small-group discussion, reflective writing, class debates, and role plays, participants explore the plight of war from the perspective of refugees, child soldiers, landmine victims and soldiers and officers caught in often agonizing dilemmas.  EHL is aligned with social studies requirements around the country and also correlated with state standards for social studies, English language arts and the Common Core for grades 7 – 12.  Starting in 2002, EHL has been introduced to schools in more than 50 countries, and American Red Cross leads the effort to introduce EHL to U.S. schools.  Participants will have the opportunity to debate, discuss and share ideas for implementation and integration of EHL into their teaching and to network with their colleagues from across the country.

The registration cost is $150, which includes an EHL pack, supplementary resources needed for the workshop, a portion of meals throughout the training, daily snacks and beverages.

The application deadline is Friday, May 4th and we will be receiving applications on a rolling basis.  Feel free to apply online at Exploring Humanitarian Law Summer Institute for 2012

A limited number of scholarships are available to help offset part of the costs associated with attending the EHL Summer Institute. Scholarships will be awarded to eligible educators up to $600. Candidates are strongly encouraged to apply early. Applications are considered on a rolling basis.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be offered to interested educators and a Certificate of Participation will be provided upon completion of the training.

The American Red Cross invites teachers to join a growing number of educators who are helping to develop future humanitarians and to empower the next generation of voters, leaders, service members and policy makers by exposing them to global issues and fostering the development of 21st century skills.  If you have any further questions about the EHL program and/ or institute, please contact Phebean Cole at Phebean.Cole@redcross.org , or by phone at 202-303-5224.

Thank you for your time, and we hope to see members of your education team on June 25th.

Sincerely,
Exploring Humanitarian Law Team
