| Description |
|
This manual is designed for teachers and community educators in Canada. It includes lesson plans, information and activities to use when teaching students from grade 6 to 12 about human rights and the newspaper. It can be used for subjects like Social Studies, Language Arts, Humanities, Law, Personal Development and Health. It contains two parts. Part I is contextualised for each province and territory in Canada, including background information on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and provincial legislation on human rights. It also introduces the structure of the newspaper and the concept of critical reading, followed by lesson plans for student activities. Part II includes handouts, overheads and websites that complement activities in part I. The examples provided in the manual often refer to the Canadian context, but much of the information, activities and handouts could be extrapolated for other contexts. |
