Description This publication offers a brief overview of some of the main changes and trends in citizenship and human rights education in England, Scotland, Wales and Nothern Ireland between 2000 and 2003. Citizenship has become part of the statutory provision for young people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and in Scotland schools have to address citizenship as one of the National Priorities. This overview describes how citizenship education and human rights education are developing and taking root in the United Kingdom and emphasizes the importance of not only the involvement of teachers and other educators but also the role of government departments in making education for democratic citizenship and human rights education sustainable.
