This e-learning course is intended for staff members of human rights and social justice NGOs and inter-governmental organisations who are responsible for information and communication (i.e. information officers, web editors, communication specialists) within their organisation. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) and social media are a dynamic field where success is dependent upon skill development and practical experience. Participants will be introduced to proven methods of using ICTs and social media to promote their human rights work. They will become equipped with the knowledge and tools to more effectively design and implement web sites, databases, social media like Facebook and Twitter or multi-media for advocacy campaigns, training and information management.
This course involves 60 hours of online lectures, webinars, reading, on-line working groups, interaction with students and instructors and assignments, and is offered over a three-month period, beginning on 13 February 2013 The course is based on a participatory, active learning approach, with an emphasis on peer-to-peer learning.
Participants are expected to come to the course with ideas about how their organisation can integrate or further develop the use of ICTs and social media within the organisation. Participants will do the required reading, prepare interim and final assignments and participate in group discussions. Participants will receive a Certificate of Participation upon successful completion of the course. The maximum number of participants is 25. It is also possible to be an auditor of the course.

About the instructor
Paul McAdams is Senior Programme Associate at HREA. Before joining HREA, he was Senior Education Specialist at Equitas–the International Centre for Human Rights Education in Montreal (Canada), where he has managed and facilitated 45 workshops for human rights educators in Canada, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. At Equitas Mr. McAdams manages and facilitates the online learning community for programme participants. Before joining Equitas in 2001 he worked for the World University Service in Ghana and Malawi and with Edutech Associates (Montreal), where he conducted a 30-hour professional development institute for teachers using technology in the classroom. He was also an instructor for an online course at McGill University.
Who should apply
The course is intended for staff members of human rights/social justice organisations, NGOs, inter-governmental organisations who are responsible for information and communication policy/programmes. Candidates should have a good written command of English and have high competence and comfort with computer and Internet use.
Costs
Tuition fee for participants: US$ 545 (25% discount) if paid by 21 December 2012; $ 615 (15% discount) if paid by 15 January 2013; $ 725 after 15 January 2013.
Tuition for auditors: US$ 205 (25% discount) if paid by 21 December 2012; $ 245 (15% discount) if paid by 15 January 2013; $ 275 after 15 January 2013.
