HREA starts new program on Human Rights, Disaster Relief and Humanitarian Aid

Today HREA launched a new program on Human Rights, Disaster Relief and Humanitarian Aid with the aim of enhancing the capacity of humanitarian workers. As part of the program a new tutored e-learning course Human Rights in Humanitarian Action and Disaster Relief (Foundation Course) will be offered, of which the first session will take place 17 September-28 October 2014.

In addition to existing courses Armed Conflict, Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, Education in Emergencies and Gender and Humanitarian Action, new courses will be offered on Effective Leadership for Humanitarian Action and Social Change and Resilience, Humanitarian Action and Human Development. A Certificate Program in Disaster Relief and Humanitarian Aid will start in 2015 as well.

Gretchen Alther, HREA’s Human Rights, Disaster Relief and Humanitarian Aid Fellow, will be teaching the new foundation course. Ms. Alther is a development specialist focused on the recovery of marginalised communities after humanitarian crises. She has designed and managed programs to support disaster relief, conflict zone aid, health, and community resilience projects in Myanmar, Pakistan, Nepal, Guatemala, Gaza, Colombia, Haiti, Afghanistan, and the United States. Ms. Alther is also a Fellow at the East West Center in Honolulu.
