Description: The
purpose of this curriculum is to provide a model for law schools, law
colleges and other faculties in the Commonwealth interested in
offering a course on human rights to their undergraduate students. It
is hoped that this will facilitate the establishment and development
of such courses throughout the Commonwealth and thus make the subject
more widely available to undergraduate students. The course objects
are to give students an understanding of and the ability to assess:
(1) the philosophical bases, principles and practical operation of the
international, regional and national regimes for the protection and
promotion of human rights; (2) the historical development of the law
relating to human rights; (3) the structure, major institutions and
jurisprudence of the international and regional human rights system;
(4) the structure and operation of the Commonwealth and Commonwealth
Secretariat; (5) the role of the Commonwealth in the protection and
promotion of human rights; (6) the constitutional promotion and
protection of key areas of human rights in Commonwealth countries; (7)
the mechanisms and institutions established in Commonwealth countries
for the protection and promotion of human rights. The
curriculum includes a significant amount of documentation, cases and
other materials relating to the Commonwealth and Commonwealth member
states to the development of human rights.
