Child Rights and Participation Course

16 September-11 October 2002

The course pays extensive attention to the methods practitioners need to ensure childrens' participation and voice in development projects and processes. It covers participatory techniques for work with children, to help them express their priorities and experiences in ways that adults can appreciate and incorporate into practical planning and management. The techniques are often useful for the children themselves in articulating and expressing their situations and learning analytical and communication skills. Time is given to children's priorities and participation in monitoring and evaluation, and the question of helping children have a political voice in wider movements. There will be a range of case studies and field visits covering topics such as children's participation in environmental projects, working with excluded and alienated children, changing institutional approaches to child welfare, NGOs' work with children.

From the course participants will gain:

  • heightened awareness of conceptual and theoretical issues around the construction of childhood and gender in childhood, and the conceptual issues in participatory development
  • enhanced knowledge about working with and for children, and integrating children into wider development work, drawing on a range of case studies, interaction with other professionals, and experience of using social analysis and management concepts and tools
  • valuable and useable materials to take home and share across your organisation, and a greater ability to pass on your new knowledge to colleagues through enhanced training, communication and presentation skills
