2002 28 October-8 November 2002 The Practical Training in International Human Rights Litigation aims to increase the knowledge and expertise of jurists in Central and Eastern Europe in using the European Convention on Human Rights (and other international standards) with a focus on litigating issues of equality and non-discrimination and minority issues both domestically and internationally. The Practical Training in International Human Rights Litigation is organised by the Netherlands Helsinki Committee (NHC) in co-operation with INTERIGHTS (London), the Netherlands Training and Study Centre for the Judiciary (SSR), the Netherlands Association for the Judiciary (NVvR) and the Netherlands Bar Association (NBA). INTERIGHTS has designed a series of litigation-oriented workshops, with the principle aim to equip advocates with practical skills for domestic application of international human rights law and for international litigation. Several of those have recently been conducted in co-operation with the Netherlands Helsinki Committee in the Caucasus. The programme is two weeks in length and combines overviews of international standards, with a practical litigation focus, short thematic workshops and a litigation workshop. Week 1 will consist of a series of presentations and workshops on the following topics: Week 2 will consist of a litigation workshop, based on the consideration of two hypothetical cases before the European Court of Human Rights. Level: professional Location: The Hague, the Netherlands Participants: approximately 20 jurists from Central and Eastern Europe. The Practical Training in International Human Rights Litigation is aimed at mid-career lawyers, both judges and lawyers, who would like to develop a specialisation in the field of using international remedies for the protection of minority rights and in the area of equality and non-discrimination. Candidates will be expected to have a record of human rights legal advocacy/litigation and co-operation with NGOs. Furthermore, candidates will have to demonstrate a potential to play a leading role in the association of their profession or in their specific field of work, including as a resource person or to undertake legal action. Fluency in English is essential. Candidates who apply with a recommendation of a local partner organisation will have priority (subject to all other criteria being met). Tuition, fee, lodging: Programme organisers will pay for travel, accommodation and meals during the programme. Application form and application need to be submitted before 20 May 2002.
