Human Rights Implications of EU Assistance to Mediterranean Partners

5-7 November 2001

This seminar is organised by the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN). The objectives are (i) to raise awareness about human rights issues at stake in relation to the so-called European Union MEDA assistance programmes and (ii) to provide participants with instruments to monitor the implication of the MEDA programmes on human rights in their home countries and to propose policies in this regard. The seminar will address the following issues:

- the background of the MEDA programmes;
- the interrelation between development aid and human rights promotion;
- projects that have been funded by the MEDA programmes within the field of civil society promotion; economic and social alleviation; and structural adjustment, and their possible impact on human rights;
- decision making structures concerning the design and implementation of the MEDA programmes.

Working languages will be Arabic, English and French.

Level: professional

Location: Brussels, Belgium

Participants: 50 participants from the Euro-Mediterranean region. Priority will be given to members of the EMHRN, in particular members from teh South and Eastern Mediterranean.

Tuition, fee, lodging: EMHRN will cover costs related to travel and accommodation. Deadline of application is 15 September 2001.
