Calendar November 2001 5-16 November 2001 For a country, achieving economic and social progress is increasingly dependent on the globalisation of the economy and liberalisation of trade, whether in terms of export-oriented efforts or of import liberalisation. Import liberalisation leads to greater competition in the domestic market, forcing companies to reassess their position. Greater export orientation will, on the whole, have a positive effect on employment, but may put downward pressure on pay and working conditions. The Programme aims at strengthening national capacity in promoting the application of International Labour Standards, so as to combine economic development with social progress within the framework of a global world economy. Working languages are English and French. Level: professional Location: Turin, Italy and Geneva, Switzerland Participants: government officials of Ministry/Department of Labour and Trade, and representatives of workers' and employers' organisations responsible for matters related to national and International Labour Standards, including the procedures under the ILO Constitution.
