Human Rights Education Associates

History

Human Rights Education Associates (HREA) was established in 1996 in order to promote and help professionalize the role of education and training in supporting the international human rights movement. HREA was established as an organization dedicated solely to education about, in and for human rights.

Co-founders of HREA are Cristina Sganga, the first Human Rights Education Coordinator at Amnesty International’s International Secretariat, and Felisa Tibbitts, then Coordinator of Human Rights Education Programmes at the Netherlands Helsinki Committee.

HREA was registered as a not-for-profit in Amsterdam, the Netherlands on 21 October 1996. Registration as a tax-exempt 501(c)3 non-profit organization in Cambridge, Massachusetts (USA) followed in September 1999. HREA LLC is now registered in New York State.
